Sewing: a Stationary Bike Sweat Catcher

I have no idea what this is really called. I had no idea that such a thing existed, until my son requested one.

The concept is that you put onto your stationary bike a piece of towelling that is fairly wide near the handlebars and fairly narrow near the seat. It is tied onto the handlebars and the seat. As the rider gets the old heart rate going, the sweat from his face will land on the towel.

The towel can be laundered (fortunately!).

For this project, fold a 60-inch wide piece of towelling lengthwise, and then cut a piece like this:

To make sure that the ribbons would not pull out, on the WRONG side, on the 12-inch ends and the 4-inch center, sew 3 ribbons, each about 2-3 feet long.

Wrap the ribbon ends to the right side. With the fabric right sides together, sew the two long edges, from the center to the selvage, leaving the selvage as the opening. Do not use a serger - that would cut the ribbons, thus defeating the whole point of having them sewn down.

Turn the project right side out, and sew the two selvages together. Since it is the selvage, it does not need any other finishing. And given that it is just going to catch drippy sweat, there is really no inspiration to make it perfect!

Alternative suggestion: just make casings for the ribbons, and stitch the ribbons in the casings.
